History

Stringwood Summer Chamber Music is an exceptional summer chamber music program that provides an unparalleled opportunity for intensive study and performance in the unique ecosystem of southeast Minnesota where hardwood forests coexist with productive farmland. The karst geology of the region features clear-running trout streams, soaring limestone bluffs, underground caves and rivers, and an abundance of flora and fauna.

Recognizing the importance of year-round study for the serious young artist, the Artaria String Quartet has established a program where rising string players ages 12 - 19 are given opportunities to grow musically and socially among peers. To that end, Stringwood is in step with the rich musical traditions of America’s finest chamber music centers.

The nationally recognized Artaria String Quartet brings to Stringwood over 20 years of expertize in teaching and performing chamber music at top level programs. As well, they have a history of successfully enriching both the artistic skills of their students and the cultural life of their supportive communities.

Activities

A typical day at Stringwood begins with an hour of personal practice, another hour of quartet rehearsal, and an hour long coaching with a member of the Artaria String Quartet.

Lunch is followed by a private lesson, personal practice, or quartet rehearsal. Quartet masterclasses with the ASQ or their invited guest artists take place every other day.

Alternating mid-afternoons and evenings, students can choose to participate in canoeing, tree tops high ropes courses or one of many other group activities on 80 acres of sustainable forest led by highly skilled naturalists from the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.

After dinner, individuals practice, quartets rehearse, and violin or bow makers stop by for an hour or two to talk about their craft before students relax with popcorn and a movie on a 20 foot screen.

Stringwood Young Artists take to the new $3.5 million Commonweal Theater stage in downtown historic Lanesboro on its popular "Over the Back Fence" evening radio show, and, not only experience great theater in a welcoming, intimate 200-seat house but also exciting performances by the ASQ and guest artists.

Weekend special events include Stringwood performances on a regional tour and the annual scenic bike trail ride to the area's famous Whalen Pie Shoppe.
